Australian Jobless Rate Climbs Amidst Market Shifts

Employment figures spark concern as corporate movements and the AI sector face scrutiny.

Australia’s economic landscape saw a notable shift this week as the national jobless rate rose to 4.7 per cent. This increase follows a significant contraction in employment figures for September, with the economy shedding 39,300 jobs. The data underscores emerging challenges in the labour market, prompting close observation from economists and policymakers regarding future economic stability.

In corporate news, Maas Group initially extended its losses despite repurchasing an additional 5.2 million shares, though the company later rallied after the corporate watchdog, ASIC, dropped its probe into executive Richard White. Separately, the Nasdaq-listed software giant Atlassian made headlines for paying co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes $4 million for private jet expenses. Atlassian, which develops collaboration and productivity software for teams, stated these payments were “necessary and appropriate” given their business purpose and Cannon-Brookes’ “nominal salary.” Meanwhile, a watchdog found Victorian public servants failed to alert the government to a suspected $285 million fraud related to COVID payments, highlighting governance failures.

The technology sector also experienced significant turbulence. CoreWeave chief Mike Intrator addressed staff in a memo, stating that “weaknesses” surrounding the attempted IPOs of its peer Firmus were “bleeding into the narrative” and hurting sentiment after shares slumped and borrowing costs spiked. The “spectacular undoing” of Firmus, a neocloud company, has become a key talking point in the AI boom, revealing underlying vulnerabilities. Adding to market jitters, Elon Musk’s singular word on social media reportedly caused a “meltdown” in artificial intelligence stocks, intensifying an ongoing plunge as debt costs and doubts about returns persist. Furthermore, espionage fears emerged at OpenAI after a recording device was allegedly discovered in an office.
