Anthropic IPO Pressures Markets Amid ASX Decline

AI sector faces key test as local shares fall; Star Entertainment and Firmus see gains.

The Australian share market experienced declines today, extending losses into the afternoon, largely following the commencement of Anthropic’s initial public offering (IPO). The launch of the AI company, which develops advanced artificial intelligence systems, is being widely regarded as a significant test for the investment landscape, poised to dictate the future trajectory of the broader AI trade. Seven co-founders of Anthropic, including siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, have reportedly attained billion-dollar fortunes following the IPO, surpassing the wealth of notable billionaires.

Despite the broader market dip, several individual companies saw notable movements. Star Entertainment Group recorded a substantial rally, jumping over 19 per cent on the back of positive earnings growth. Similarly, SCX.ai registered gains after announcing a partnership with SpaceX. In a noteworthy investment success, Rich Lister Alex Waislitz secured a profit multiple of 38 times his initial investment in Firmus. Waislitz first invested in Firmus, a nascent bitcoin mining firm, when its share price was between $4 and $6, marking a rare positive turn for the company.

In other corporate news, technology giant Microsoft plans to offer redundancy packages to approximately 60,000 workers as part of new AI cost-cutting measures. These buyouts will be available to certain staff at a vice-presidential level and below, following previous rounds of layoffs. Meanwhile, Deloitte’s chief executive received a 45 per cent pay rise, bringing his new wage package to $13.5 million, positioning him among the world’s highest-paid consultants, even as the firm implements job cuts. On the state level, the Victorian Labor government has proposed a stamp duty waiver for small businesses, a move coinciding with Treasurer Colin Brooks’ revelation that a broad property downturn has created a multi-billion dollar deficit in the state’s budget.
