Jamie Pherous, the founder of Corporate Travel, recently made a notable and somewhat unexpected appearance at Morgans’ annual investor conference in Noosa. His presence at the Elysium Noosa Resort, described as being ahead of his anticipated public schedule, marks a significant return to the public eye after a period of maintaining a deliberately low profile. Corporate Travel is an ASX-listed travel agency, providing comprehensive corporate travel management services to businesses across various sectors. Pherous’s reappearance follows a period of significant upheaval for both the company and its former leadership.
Pherous had stepped down as chief executive of Corporate Travel in February, seven months into an 11-month suspension from public markets, which stemmed from his implication in an overcharging scandal. This corporate challenge significantly impacted the company’s market standing. Following the eventual resumption of trading, Corporate Travel’s shares experienced a substantial decline, dropping by a considerable 86 per cent. Despite these formidable challenges, Pherous has since increased his stake in the company by purchasing more shares, a move that has garnered considerable attention from market observers and sparked speculation regarding his future involvement.
The Morgans conference, a key event for investors, had initially been anticipated as a more celebratory occasion, particularly in light of the upcoming $44 billion float of Firmus. However, the sentiment at this year’s Noosa gathering has been described with a different tone. Morgans, notably, also managed Corporate Travel’s initial public offering many years prior. Pherous’s attendance at the conference, therefore, has sparked considerable conversation among financial professionals and attendees, many of whom may have been directly impacted by Corporate Travel’s market difficulties and the subsequent share price performance.
