First acid application to heaps since 2009 marks critical milestone as project progresses towards Q4 cathode production.

Cyprium Metals Limited (ASX: CYM) has provided a significant operations update on its Phase 1 Copper Cathode Restart Project at the Nifty Copper Complex in Western Australia. Cyprium, an ASX-listed Australian copper company focused on redeveloping its flagship Nifty property which previously produced substantial copper from both oxide and sulphide resources, announced the commencement of commissioning for the existing heaps with acid. This marks the first acid application to these heaps since operations ceased in 2009, signifying a crucial step towards renewed production.

The company reported a successful trial of direct injection leaching technology, confirming well design and the existing heaps’ ability to accept injected solution at commercial flow rates exceeding 250 cubic metres per hour. A 14-well water flush trial yielded copper of sufficient grade and quantity to commission the Solvent Extraction (SX) and Electrowinning (EW) plant. Following this success, Cyprium has drilled 98 production wells, providing access to approximately 1.7 million tonnes of material. The SX area is substantially mechanically complete, with the EW area preparing for cathode and anode installation.

Further project advancements include the installation of the rectiformer and transformer, and firewater infrastructure is largely complete. All required regulatory approvals for the Phase 1 project are in place, contingent on successful commissioning. Cyprium also highlighted a strong safety performance, reporting zero lost time injuries since construction commenced. Executive Chairman Matt Fifield commented, “Applying acid solution to the existing heaps is a significant milestone for Cyprium – this is the first leach on these pads in nearly twenty years.” First cathode production is now anticipated in the fourth quarter during wet commissioning and ramp-up.
