Sohn Conference Reveals Mixed Fortunes in Stock Picking

Philanthropic event showcases stellar long-term gains alongside recent market challenges and crucial lessons.

The upcoming Sohn Hearts & Minds investment conference, set for Queenstown on November 6, continues its dual mission: fostering financial insight and significant philanthropy. Since its Australian inception in 2016, Sohn Hearts & Minds has donated over $100 million to medical research, establishing itself as a major corporate philanthropist, while also providing valuable stock picking opportunities. This year’s event will feature prominent speakers including Todd Boehly, Robert Smith, and Brad Betts.

Historically, the conference has delivered impressive long-term returns. An initial $10,000 investment in Hamish Douglass’s Apple pick would now be worth $124,000. Patrick Hodgens’ Chorus pick grew to $28,000, and John Pearce’s Transurban pick to $20,000. More recently, Jeremy Bond’s 2024 pick, Coeur Mining, generated almost 200 per cent, while Mullin’s oil field services company SLB returned over 35 per cent. These figures underscore the potential of astute selections.

However, a hypothetical equal-weighted portfolio of last year’s 2025 stock picks from the Sydney conference saw a decline. A $90,339 investment on November 17 last year was valued at $81,770 as of November 2, a 9.5 per cent fall. This contrasted with the S&P/ASX 200’s 2.5 per cent rise and the S&P 500’s 13 per cent climb. JO Hambro’s Samir Mehta experienced a 50 per cent plunge in his pick, Indian insurer PB Fintech, due to unforeseen regulatory changes, highlighting inherent risks in individual stock selection.

Despite these challenges, experts affirm the enduring value of active stock picking. Morningstar’s Matthew Hodge notes that while beating an index is tough, knowledge gained from losses aids future decisions. Mullin, a long-time investor, argues the opportunity for fundamental stock pickers has never been greater, especially as passive investing dominates. He points to overlooked commodity investments as a prime example where fundamental analysis can uncover significant mispricing.
