The Australian share market experienced a downturn near midday AEDT, primarily driven by a broader sell-off in US markets which subsequently impacted local mining and technology sectors. Defying this trend, shares in KMD Brands, the owner of iconic outdoor and surf apparel labels such as Kathmandu and Rip Curl, rallied strongly. KMD Brands is a global company specialising in outdoor, surf, and fashion apparel and equipment. The surge follows reports that New York-based brand giant Bluestar Alliance, a firm with a global portfolio including Off-White, Hurley, Scotch & Soda, and Dickies, is engaged in takeover discussions for the company.
Meanwhile, banking giant Westpac announced a substantial full-year profit of $6.8 billion, demonstrating resilience in a fluctuating financial landscape. Despite this strong financial performance, the bank delivered a more conservative outlook regarding the national housing market. Westpac analysts are now forecasting a significant 10.9 per cent decline in Australian property prices.
The bank explained that this anticipated drop stems from an uncertain economic environment where interest rates are projected to remain “elevated.” The sustained high interest rate environment, coupled with a softening mortgage market, is notably crimping profit margins for lenders. This situation presents a challenging outlook for the real estate sector and prospective homeowners, highlighting the sensitivity of the market to ongoing monetary policy and economic conditions.
