Chalmers Lifts Bank Bond Caps for Productivity; Global Markets Grapple with Uncertainty.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has announced a significant uplift in bank bond caps, part of a $780 million productivity push aimed at stimulating the Australian economy. This deregulation effort comes at a crucial time, as global fiscal debt, inflation, and rising interest rates exert considerable pressure on economic forecasts. Meanwhile, a pervasive sense of “fear and confusion” has reportedly seized global markets, reflecting growing investor apprehension that world leaders and business heavyweights may deviate from historically “rational” market expectations.

Locally, the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) experienced declines near midday (AEDT), with several prominent companies seeing notable shifts. Zip, the buy-now-pay-later provider, crashed to a two-year low, while technology giant Meta Platforms saw an 8 per cent drop amidst significant spending plans. In contrast, MinRes reported an increase in lithium sales, though Temple & Webster’s revenue experienced a slip. The broader market downturn saw Treasuries surge as investors sought safe-haven assets, with oil prices climbing past US$113 a barrel.

The financial sector is also navigating specific challenges. Apollo’s MaxCap, a non-bank lender that provides credit facilities primarily for property developments, is set to cut approximately a third of its staff. This move follows the firm’s exposure to some failed property developments, signalling a potential slump in the private credit market. Internationally, Barclays announced plans to cut 5000 jobs, illustrating a growing trend within the banking industry to adopt “AI at scale,” sparking concerns about technology-driven workforce reductions globally.
