NextDC Shares Plunge on Data Centre Delays

Melbourne data centre power delays trigger market re-evaluation and financial covenant concerns.

NextDC, an ASX-listed provider of critical digital infrastructure, experienced a brutal sharemarket reaction this week following a concerning update about power delays at its new Melbourne data centre. The company, which operates facilities housing computer systems vital for cloud technology and artificial intelligence, saw its stock plummet a staggering 40 per cent on Wednesday, inflicting substantial losses for shareholders. This immediate fallout has highlighted intense scrutiny over its operational and financial health.

The sharp sell-off brings into focus NextDC’s capital-intensive nature and its historical shareholder experience. Since listing at $1 in 2010, the share count expanded nearly tenfold, while the stock price gained only 5.5 times, suggesting capital destruction. Analyst consensus has shifted dramatically, with the mean forecast price cut from $20.54 to $12.24. The company’s available liquidity of $8.7 billion is now weighed against substantial anticipated capital expenditure, estimated at $5 billion for 2027 and a further $7 billion beyond.

A forecast 35 per cent reduction in NextDC’s earnings places immense pressure on its cash flows, intensifying concerns over its ability to meet banking covenants. These covenants limit the company to a 60 per cent gearing ratio and require earnings to be at least 50 per cent larger than its interest bill. Analysts at Jefferies warn NextDC risks narrowly meeting its interest coverage ratio this year and potentially breaching it in 2028 if power issues persist. This challenging environment means CEO Craig Scroggie’s substantial incentive package, tied to the share price exceeding $26 by 2030, now appears unachievable. With future access to subordinated debt markets likely closed, NextDC must carefully balance moderating growth ambitions with satisfying debt financiers, navigating a landscape with little margin for error.
