The Western Australian Government has appointed Saj Abdoolakhan as the new Small Business Commissioner and CEO of the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC). Abdoolakhan brings extensive experience from senior leadership roles within the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, where he oversaw regulatory functions across the building and energy safety sectors. Taking over from inaugural commissioner David Eaton, Abdoolakhan will commence his role on May 19, 2025.

As Small Business Commissioner, Abdoolakhan will advocate for small businesses across Western Australia and lead the SBDC’s operations. Small businesses are crucial to the state’s economy, accounting for approximately 97% of all businesses and contributing over $50 billion annually. The government emphasizes that this appointment will enable the SBDC to continue supporting the diversification of Western Australia’s economy and fostering job creation.

Small Business Minister Jackie Jarvis highlighted Abdoolakhan’s regulatory, leadership, and public sector expertise, stating that he is well-equipped to build upon the SBDC’s efforts in supporting small businesses. Jarvis also noted Western Australia’s strong economic performance and expressed confidence in the SBDC’s continued support for the state’s 247,000 small businesses, which form the backbone of its economy and communities.
