AI Turmoil Rocks Markets Amid NVIDIA Scandal

Funds brace for equity sales amid AI market volatility and NVIDIA CEO investigation.

While global markets offered a brief sigh of relief as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East remained contained, the significant fallout from last week’s brutal sell-off in artificial intelligence stocks continues to dominate sentiment. Financial institutions are warning of substantial market adjustments ahead, with JPMorgan estimating volatility-targeted funds may need to shed $US50 billion ($73 billion) of equity exposure in the coming days. Barclays Equities Tactical Strategies models suggest an even larger potential sale of roughly $US135 billion in US equity futures over the next 24 to 48 hours, a move that could represent one of the largest single-day adjustments since COVID-19.

Compounding the market’s unease, the artificial intelligence sector has been rocked by a bizarre scandal involving Jensen Huang, the founder and chief executive of Nvidia. Nvidia is a leading technology company known for designing graphics processing units (GPUs) crucial for AI development and deployment. Huang is currently under board investigation regarding a possible Chinese spy, with whom he has admitted to having an affair. The potential removal of Huang, often considered central to the AI boom, introduces significant uncertainty, raising questions about the stability of the sector’s financing mechanisms and leadership succession.

Analysts offer differing perspectives on the AI market’s trajectory. Viktor Shvets notes that despite surging leverage, it remains less extreme than in previous crashes, and rapid adoption should bolster big tech cash flows. He suggests speculative positions are largely flushed, and valuations are not ‘silly’ post-falls, predicting limited further pain as demand for compute and memory still exceeds supply. Conversely, Bank of America strategist Michael Hartnett remains cautious, believing the market has yet to see a true ‘clean-out’ for a sustainable rally. He highlights the S&P 500’s ‘ominous double top’ as a bearish technical sign, urging investors to remain circumspect after its substantial four-year bull run.
