US Midterms Spark Relief Rally, AI Concerns

Wall Street breathes relief as Democrats sweep, but AI sector faces new regulatory headwinds.

The US midterm elections concluded with a decisive Democratic victory, triggering a significant relief rally on Wall Street. Major indices reacted positively, with the S&P 500 climbing 1.8 per cent and the Nasdaq 100 jumping 1.5 per cent. This market optimism aligns with historical trends showing post-midterm gains and stems from a belief that political gridlock will temper extreme policy proposals. This “Goldilocks” scenario also saw oil prices drop by 10 per cent to US$93 a barrel and the 10-year US Treasury yield ease to 4.9 per cent, suggesting potential relief on inflation concerns.

However, the Democratic sweep presents an immediate challenge for the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, impacting companies like Tesla and SpaceX, which are fundamentally AI companies. Elon Musk, who reportedly invested heavily in the Republican campaign, saw his firms face headwinds. In Texas, a critical data centre hub, Democratic victor Gina Hinojosa campaigned on pausing new data centre development until stricter energy and water rules are established. This regulatory threat, mirroring broader anti-data centre sentiment across the US, led Musk to comment, “Data centres in space looking pretty appealing right now.” As a result, SpaceX shares slumped 3.8 per cent, Tesla fell 2.2 per cent, and other AI-related stocks also saw significant declines.

While Wall Street initially cheered the outcome, the longer-term financial landscape remains complex. Beyond immediate AI regulatory concerns, investors must contend with President Trump’s potentially unpredictable foreign policy initiatives and the Democrats’ clear agenda for higher corporate and wealth taxes. The initial relief rally thus unfolds against a backdrop where immediate optimism is balanced against significant looming policy and regulatory shifts that could impact key economic drivers.
