Data centre firm sees executive changes as ASX falters, while M&A rumours and economic warnings emerge.

The Australian share market experienced declines today, with technology and retail sectors struggling, despite some rebound in banks and miners. Amidst this backdrop, data centre group NextDC faced extended losses, prompting significant executive changes. The company, which specialises in providing co-location services and connectivity solutions for businesses, announced that its CEO, Craig Scroggie, would lose his bonus. Furthermore, chairman Douglas Flynn and other board directors had their fees cut by 10 per cent, a direct consequence of delays affecting a crucial Melbourne project, known as M3.

Broader market movements saw the ASX drop near noon (AEDT), as CSL fell while BSL rallied. In other corporate news, insurer Challenger rejected a takeover bid from Japanese firm Dai-ichi Life. Meanwhile, property developer Avid Property is reportedly partnering with global investment giant Brookfield’s property team in Sydney. People briefed on sell-side discussions indicated that this partnership has already tabled an offer to Ingenia, suggesting a potential take-private deal for the property group.

Financial markets are also observing cautionary signals from renowned investor Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, which appears to be flashing warning signs. Experts suggest that investors are increasingly turning defensive, indicating a potentially significant shift in market sentiment. In political-economic developments, One Nation, led by Pauline Hanson, is undergoing a notable pivot from its traditional protest-focused stance towards a more policy-driven approach. Responding to widespread cost-of-living concerns, the party is reportedly enlisting banking specialists and think tanks in an effort to present itself as a credible force capable of managing the economy and even forming government.
