ASX Dips as NAB Cuts 2500 Roles

Major lender slashes workforce amid broader market decline and key corporate movements.

The Australian share market experienced a downturn today, with the ASX dropping 1 per cent by near noon AEDT, largely driven by a significant sell-off in the mining sector. Amid this broader market decline, National Australia Bank (NAB), one of Australia’s largest financial institutions providing banking and financial services, saw its shares fall 2.6 per cent. This dip followed the major lender’s announcement of a massive restructure, which will see approximately 2500 jobs cut. NAB has informed investors that it plans to slash 6 per cent of its workforce and substantially reduce its reliance on consultants and contractors, with most of these reductions expected within months, signalling a notable shift for Australia’s white-collar workforce.

In other significant corporate developments, global mining giant BHP, which explores, produces, and processes minerals and resources, has committed to doubling its Australian copper output by 2040. This ambitious pledge includes an initial A$1.1 billion towards a growth program that could ultimately involve almost A$64 billion in spending over the next decade, highlighting a major investment focus. Internationally, the South Korean data centre firm Elice faced a challenging debut on the IPO market, with its shares tumbling 27 per cent following its listing.

The property sector also witnessed notable activity, with the Christian Brothers order putting its A$25 million headquarters in Melbourne’s Parkville up for sale. The 7119-square-metre estate is being divested as the order confronts substantial liabilities totalling A$774 million. Domestically, Victoria’s auction market is adjusting to a new reserve price disclosure rule. While this legislative change aims to be a boon for buyers by increasing transparency, vendors are proving wary in the initial phases, leading to shifts in auction dynamics across the state.
