Firebird Metals Limited (FRB) has announced a significant advancement in battery materials technology, successfully producing its first 99.999% (5N) ultra-high-purity manganese sulphate. Firebird is an Australian battery materials technology company developing advanced manganese-based lithium-ion battery materials for the EV and energy-storage markets. Its proprietary technology enables the direct processing of manganese concentrate to cathode active materials within a single integrated process line. This achievement positions Firebird as the sole Western company known to have successfully manufactured 5N manganese sulphate, highlighting its role at the forefront of high-purity battery material innovation. Ultra-high-purity manganese sulphate commands an approximate 33% price premium over standard battery-grade material due to its structural scarcity within the advanced battery materials value chain.
The company’s proprietary processing technology, developed through ongoing research and development, is fluoride-free, eliminating the need for specialised equipment and avoiding fluorine-containing waste. This flexible process can accommodate a broad range of manganese-containing feedstocks, including low-grade ores and waste materials, while supporting efficient manganese extraction and potential commercial-scale application. Concurrently, Firebird has initiated an additional technical program at its Hunan Pilot Plant, focusing on processing manganese ore from its 100%-owned Oakover Manganese Project in Western Australia. This initiative aims to prepare for the commissioning of the Australian Demonstration Plant (ADP) in Perth in 2027, with the program to be replicated as the ADP’s first experimental campaign.
Firebird CEO, Mr Ron Mitchell, emphasised the critical role of ultra-high-purity battery input materials for advanced, high-performance battery chemistries. He stated that the successful production of 5N manganese sulphate is a testament to the company’s processing capability and an important step in preparing the Australian technical team for the ADP’s assembly and operation. Mr Mitchell added that the process holds significant potential for commercial-scale application beyond the ADP, with commercialisation being a key workstream for 2027. The program utilising Australian Oakover ore further demonstrates Firebird’s integrated pathway from Western Australian feedstock to high-purity battery materials.
