Latrobe Magnesium (ASX: LMG) is progressing its magnesium production technology while prioritising a proposed 50,000-tonne-a-year commercial plant in South Carolina. The US project is targeting primary magnesium production for defence, aerospace, automotive and aluminium markets, with first production currently indicated for 2030.
The company is also advancing its demonstration plant in Victoria, where the pyrometallurgical component was 70% complete at the start of September. A four-week commissioning campaign is planned for November–December 2026 with the aim of producing magnesium crowns containing more than 98% magnesium, following earlier demonstration of the hydrometallurgical process to recover magnesium oxide from fly ash.
