Western Germany Dominates Nation’s Inherited Wealth

Destatis report reveals significant concentration of taxable asset transfers in western states.

Inheritances and gifts across Germany remained heavily concentrated in the nation’s western states in 2025. The German statistics office Destatis reported on Tuesday that a staggering 95 per cent of all taxable asset transfers occurred in the west, painting a clear picture of enduring regional economic disparity. This finding highlights a persistent imbalance within the reunited country, decades after its unification.

Tax authorities assessed a substantial €142.5 billion, equivalent to approximately $161.54 billion, in inherited and gifted assets within western Germany. In stark contrast, the eastern states and Berlin recorded a significantly smaller €8.0 billion in such transfers during the same period. The financial chasm between the regions is undeniable, with the vast majority of wealth flowing through the western half of the nation.

The imbalance was equally pronounced on a per-capita basis. Western states registered just over €2,100 in taxable inheritances and gifts per resident, a figure more than four times the approximately €500 recorded for residents in the eastern states and Berlin. This significant disparity in wealth accumulation per person further underscores the deep-seated economic differences that persist across Germany.

While the eastern states and Berlin collectively represent 19 per cent of Germany’s total population at the end of 2025, they accounted for only 5 per cent of the total value of taxable wealth transfers. The economy of the former East Germany has undergone a transformative period since its reunification with the significantly wealthier West Germany in 1990. However, over a generation later, key economic areas, including the distribution of wealth, continue to lag behind the nation’s western counterparts, as evidenced by the latest statistics.
