The Northern Territory government is actively promoting gas exploration opportunities in the Beetaloo Basin, showcasing a 4,000 square kilometre area—five times the size of Singapore—at the North American Prospect Expo conference in Houston, Texas. A high-level delegation from the NT’s mining and energy department is attending the conference to engage directly with explorers and investors who might be interested in the region. The Beetaloo Basin is considered one of Australia’s most significant shale plays.
The acreage is strategically located near an existing gas pipeline and highway, enhancing its appeal for potential development. Companies already active in the Beetaloo include Santos, Tamboran Resources, and Origin Energy, all of whom have drilled wells in the area. These companies are exploring the basin’s potential to supply gas to the east coast domestic market, with possibilities for future export projects.
Gerard Maley, the NT minister for mining and energy, stated that the government delegation would proactively engage with explorers and investors at the Houston conference. The government hopes to attract significant investment into the region to further develop its gas resources. The Beetaloo Basin represents a vital opportunity to enhance Australia’s energy security and contribute to the nation’s economic growth through responsible resource development.
