Deal includes 1GW of solar farms, 800MW of battery projects

Macquarie’s Aula Energy has acquired one gigawatt of operating solar farms and 800 megawatts of developing battery projects from Lightsource BP, a UK-based company. The acquired assets comprise five solar farms situated across New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria, offering the potential to integrate battery storage systems throughout the portfolio. Aula Energy is focused on developing and operating renewable energy assets. The company aims to provide sustainable energy solutions by investing in wind, solar, and battery storage projects.

Notably, these assets were previously earmarked for sale to a Chinese government-backed entity, a transaction that ultimately faltered due to the lack of Foreign Investment Review Board approval over a 12-month period. Prior to Sembcorp’s acquisition of Alinta Energy in December, Singapore’s Sembcorp also reportedly considered acquiring the green energy platform, which is valued at approximately $1 billion.

According to Aula Energy chief executive Chad Hymas, this acquisition signifies the company’s ongoing expansion efforts. Hymas said Aula is, “deliberately building a portfolio of assets that will meet the long-term energy needs of Australian communities”.

The acquired assets are expected to complement Aula’s existing portfolio of wind projects currently under construction, as well as its pipeline of wind and battery projects in development, further solidifying Aula’s position in the Australian renewable energy market.
