New service targets low-data, low-power IoT needs in remote environments

Global satellite communications company Viasat (NASDAQ:VSAT) has launched its next-generation IoT Nano connectivity service, designed to deliver two-way messaging worldwide. Viasat is a global communications company with offices in 24 countries. It develops global communications solutions to power high-quality, reliable, secure, affordable, and fast connections.

The IoT Nano service aims to meet the growing demand for cost-effective, low-data, low-power internet of things (IoT) services, particularly in remote and challenging environments where mobile connectivity is limited. The service is particularly relevant for the mining sector, where remote operations often face infrastructure challenges leading to increased costs and logistical complexities.

For mining companies, IoT Nano facilitates the remote monitoring and management of industrial assets, enhancing operational efficiency and improving the safety of onsite personnel. Key applications include gaining real-time insights into the performance and health of heavy mining equipment and transmitting operational data for predictive maintenance and optimisation. The IoT Nano service is powered by ORBCOMM’s next-generation satellite IoT service, OGx, offering faster message delivery speeds, larger message sizes, and new hardware options.

According to Viasat’s Vice President, Andy Kessler, the IoT Nano service represents a significant advancement in providing flexible, scalable, and energy-efficient IoT connectivity to businesses operating in remote areas. By leveraging the enhanced capabilities of the ORBCOMM OGx service and equipping the partner ecosystem with new low-cost modules and service capabilities, Viasat aims to empower customers with access to smarter data, more frequently, in more places, and at a lower cost.
