LU7 focuses on silver recovery using advanced recycling technology amid rising demand and supply deficits

Lithium Universe Limited (LU7), an ASX-listed company focused on bridging the lithium conversion gap and revolutionising PV solar panel recycling, has announced its strategic focus on silver extraction from discarded solar panels. The company is leveraging technology acquired from Macquarie University to recover valuable metals from end-of-life solar panels, starting with silver. The decision is driven by the increasing demand for silver in the solar industry and a projected market deficit of 117.6 million ounces in 2025.

Silver is a crucial component in solar cells, facilitating electricity flow, with an average panel containing approximately 20 grams of silver valued at around A$36. As the global expansion of solar panel installations continues, demand for silver is rising rapidly, particularly in countries like Australia, which aims to achieve 82% renewable energy by 2030. However, silver supply is struggling to keep pace, leading to price increases from US$15/oz in 2018 to US$34/oz in 2025.

Lithium Universe has acquired global rights to Macquarie University’s Microwave Joule Heating Technology (MJHT), aimed at efficiently separating materials in solar panels for recycling. Following the silver extraction phase, the company plans to explore the extraction of other valuable metals such as silicon, gallium, and indium. Executive Chairman Iggy Tan stated that prioritising silver extraction addresses the large volume of residual material, rising prices, and supply shortages.

The company aims to capitalise on the growing market for silver recovery, driven by increasing demand and supply constraints. With millions of tonnes of solar panel waste expected by 2050 and only a small fraction currently recycled, Lithium Universe sees a lucrative opportunity to extract silver and other critical metals, contributing to a sustainable revenue stream and addressing environmental challenges. The company believes its technology offers a more efficient recycling solution, positioning it as a key player in the circular economy.
