Amazon has surpassed Walmart in quarterly revenue for the first time. In the fourth quarter of 2024, Amazon reported $187.8 billion in sales, exceeding Walmart’s $180.6 billion for the same period.
Despite this quarterly shift, Walmart maintains its lead in annual sales, with $681 billion in 2024, compared to Amazon’s $638 billion.
Amazon’s growth is driven by its core retail operations and expanding sectors like cloud computing and advertising. Amazon Web Services (AWS) accounted for nearly 17% of the company’s total sales last year.
In response, Walmart has developed a third-party marketplace and fulfillment services, though these remain smaller than Amazon’s. Walmart has also introduced an advertising business and the Walmart+ loyalty program to compete with Amazon Prime.
Both companies continue to vie for consumer spending, adapting strategies to leverage their respective strengths in the evolving retail landscape.
