Axel REE (ASX: AXL) has commenced the next phase of exploration at its Caladão Rare Earth Elements (REE) + Gallium Project in Brazil, engaging SRK Consulting and ANSTO to develop a mineral resource estimate (MRE) and conduct metallurgical testing.
SRK Consulting will undertake a JORC 2012 Inferred MRE for both REE and gallium, initially covering 35km² in Area A, with the potential to extend into a 25km² mineralised zone in Area B. The project spans a total of 400km², with only 15% of the area drilled and identified as mineralised. The MRE will support optimal step-out and infill drilling to enhance resource confidence and guide future expansion.
ANSTO has been engaged to evaluate the extraction potential of REE and gallium through metallurgical testing. The program will include desorption response diagnostic testing at pH 4 to assess the extractability of ionically adsorbed REE, impurity removal, and the development of a processing flowsheet. The results will determine the feasibility of optimising recoveries and advancing towards rare earth carbonate precipitation.
China’s recent ban on gallium exports has heightened its importance as a critical metal, with prices exceeding $250,000 per tonne. Caladão has the potential to be one of the few REE and gallium resources globally, positioning Axel REE as a key player in the sector. Managing director Dr Fernando Tallarico stated that the engagement of SRK and ANSTO marks a major milestone in advancing the project towards resource definition and future development.
