Wealth management and insurance giant AMP has stayed with the financial sector in choosing a new chair.

The company told the ASX on Friday that it had appointed Catherine Brenner as chairman.

Ms Brenner is a former investment banker and has been a member of AMP’s board since 2010. Until recently she was also the Chairman of AMP Life and NMLA. She is a director of Boral and Coca-Cola Amatil.

She will take over from interim chair, John Palmer, the chair of Rabobank New Zealand. He had replaced former Macquarie banker, Simon McKeon who abruptly retired in April.

"We have a highly skilled board but expect to make additional appointments to further strengthen our collective background, perspective and experience against the strategy," Ms Brenner said in a statement on Friday.
